You missed one of the best parts! In the sequel, Boktai 2, your death reduces your in-game currency, and a 'kindly' NPC would offer you loans if you were dying too much! These loans could stack until you had too much debt, and then the game made you run on a treadmill to work it off! Now you REALLY don't wanna overheat your gun and die!

I loved Boktai, but couldn’t beat the final boss one gloomy summer, being underpowered without sunshine. I took it to GAME to trade it in and just before I got there, the clouds parted and glorious sunlight shone down on me. I sat outside the shopping centre and beat the boss and the game, and took it home with me forever.

Boktai also has a sequel on the GBA, and another on the DS! The DS game, Lunar Knights, lost its Boktai continuity when localized/rewritten, in order to appeal to more players. It also used an in-game weather and sun cycle, with an option to plug in Boktai 1 or 2 in the GBA slot for the genuine solar-powered experience and some extra goodies. Lunar Knights is like my favorite DS game ever, it's so good.

Not often you see a gimmick as well thought through as this:) Never had a GBA, but most non-backlit LCD's from that time were a bit hard to read in direct sunlight- aside from that, it sounds really neat! (Edit: Well, that's what I get for not reading through the comments before writing my own:D correction- Gameboy Advance should look just fine with the sun shining at it)

I think I heard of this way back when... but it looks like it'd be pretty interesting to play... especially when I could just flip a switch to emulate THE SUN

This is the first time I've heard of Kojima being involved with the game. I've only heard of the game via it being an entry on strange peripheral lists, but they don't mention that fact. Now one thing I do recall being in a list entry is the safety on the gun also worked as a safety for the game. It forced a cool down period for the cart as the sun was fairly hot on it.

My brother had this when we were kids and living in scotland we literally couldnt play it most of the time even struggled when we went on holiday good times seemed like it mightve been A game !

I still have my copy of Boktai. It was a fun game! I live in Vegas, so there's definitely no loss in sunlight, but I never got to the overheat point.
